"So.. today, you're leaving."
The sound came from behind him, as Katsuo, the small 16 year old turned around. His mother stood at the doorway of his house, the one that he just exited.
"I am. It's very early, but I have to leave now if I don't want father to catch me leaving." Katsuo replied, saddened at the fact that her mother had to find him right before leaving the house. But there was some truth to that statement. Normally, his father wouldn't mind him leaving every day, because he usually just went off to work or doing someone's odd job. But today, at three o'clock in the morning with various bags slinging across his shoulders and a heavy backpack, it was obvious what he was doing. He was leaving the house for a while.
"I know, I know... but it's going to be hard to see you leave like this. You have your father's deck?" She asked, as Katsuo dug around in his messenger bag with his free hand, and pulled it out.
"Yep. How long do you wanna bet before he notices it's gone? He never even bothers to look at it!" Katsuo joked with a small laugh afterward, but his mother's lack of amusement in the joke stopped his as well.
It was serious. She really was going to miss him.
"... I'm sorry. I swear, when I graduate, I'll come back. I promise. I won't be able to keep in touch without Father finding out, but..."
"No, don't worry about that, Katsu. Take your time and learn what you need to at the academy. I'll try to keep your father from picking up on the situation for as long as possible." His mother reassured him, as Katsuo turned away, embarrassed. She called him by his nickname, Katsu. It was very endearing to him, and he didn't let anyone else call him by that name. The reason why, she was the one that named him in the first place purposely because the name itself meant 'Heroic Victory.' It was her wish that whenever Katsuo was in trouble, or wasn't feeling all that great, he would only need to look to his own name for inspiration.
And thus far, it worked. He had gone through his 16 years as a human on this planet looking to the very name his mother gave him as a path to his own growth.
"T-thank you.." Katsuo murmured, before looking back up to his mother. "It will take me a while, so.. please, hang in there."
"I know it will. But, before you go..." Her mother reaffirmed, before digging into her jeans pocket and pulled out a card. An Xyz card, with a tiny creature with saddened eyes on the front of it, and named 'Baby Tragon.' "I've kept this card close to me when I first received it, and I want to give it to you."
"To me? Why?"
"Because it reminds me so much of you! It always looks so sad, and feels like it's given up. But... when it gets right down to it, it instantly perks up and knows it can do anything! I've always noticed that about you, Katsu, you know. You try to hide it, but you always are so sad whenever I don't look. But when you're doing something, or your making your art or enjoying yourself, you look so happy!" Her mother gleefully recollected, as she outstretched the card to her son. "Take it. And know that you always have a home to come to when you graduate."
Katsuo was not only astounded, but saddened. She did notice all those times after all, huh.. I try to put on a happy face for her.. Katsuo regretfully thought, but looked at his mother in her eyes. This was not the time for regret. He carefully took the card from her hand, and-
There was a certain change in the air around him. It was, as if, there was a third person with them. It wasn't his father, but.. something like him. He wasn't aware of it, but the card, Baby Tragon, was reacting to him. The Duel Spirit emerged from it;s card and flew around his messy haired head and perched itself on it's shoulder. It certainly didn't look too motivated, but rather sad too. It was experiencing the loss of Katsuo's mother too.
"Goodbye, Katsu. I'll always love you." She reassured him, bringing her short son into a warm embrace as she stroked his messy hair. It wasn't long before she released him and headed back inside, as tears began to form on the corners of her eyes.
"Goodbye.. Mother." Katsuo whispered, getting teary eyed himself before turning around, and then, running. He was not going to miss the boat ride to duel academy, the boat ride he spent so much of his life working for until now.
